Android Users! Don’t Install These Apps From Google Play Store

If you remember previous month we had shared a news in which security researchers at McAffee have warned Android users to stop downloading apps from Play Store that claims unnecessary protection against WannaCry Ransomware.

Now it looks like multiple Antivirus apps have flooded in the Google Play store. Let me tell you these Anti-virus solutions are there to infect you, not to protect you.

Since, WannaCry is based on Windows vulnerability, it will never reach Android devices. RiskIQ, a cybersecurity firm have discovered seven Android apps on Google Play Store which are related to WannaCry.

These apps demand more permission than the average app permissions includes knowing your phones’ wake password. Over hundreds of scam, antivirus apps have been discovered in third party websites, all those apps contain adware, trojan or malware.

RiskIQ stated “There has been a recent rise in fake WannaCry ‘protectors,’ apps that use fear and hysteria around the self-propagating ransomware to drive downloads, even though mobile systems are safe from its impact”

The company found that out of 4,292 antivirus apps, 525 set off malware alarms. You will be shocked to know that out of 525 apps 508 were found in the Google Play Store itself.

Forrest Gueterman, security analyst with RiskIQ said “Google Play is one of the most reputable app stores in the world, so the fact that so many reside there shows the dangers facing mobile app consumers,”

Google have a process to scan apps before it publishes in Google Play store. However, Google’s system can be fooled indirectly or directly. This is what opens the gateway for malware to enter the Google Play Store.

If you want to keep your device safe from those malicious apps then you need to download apps from reputable developers. Make sure to go through reviews and ratings before giving it some space.
